Fearless Truthseeker Missing: Arjen Kamphuis

Subtitle

On the ICT floor of "Broedplaats Volkskrant", Amsterdam, Gendo and the Free Knowledge Institute (FKI) shared the kitchen. That's where I met Arjen end 2007 and had animated talks about Open Source software. Arjan was Chief Technology Officer of Gendo, I volunteered for the FKI and worked as manager ICT at Friends of the Earth Netherlands.

Many seeds were planned, but few results could be harvested that time.

My talks with Arjen soon resulted in several organised gatherings with non-profit's around ICT topics: the importance of having a strategy, the need for open standards, the advantages of open source, the must of controlling your own data, transparancy, why is software which is created using taxpayers’ money not released as Free Software or the current ICT plans of our Dutch government. Arjens enhousiasm and knowledge of facts made him the key-actor in those meetings. Also Arjen helped fuelling my idea of starting the company Therp in that time by sharing his own business experiences and contacts.

Meeting him mostly on security-, open source software-, activists- or free press gatherings the following years, he stood out. He wasn't led by fear, (un)popularity of opinions, the delusions of the day, or the gap between what we want to believe as against what we experienced. He distinguised cause and effect, chased the truth and often found it. If he is victim of a crime, or if he choose to go "under the radar", I'm convinced that's the reason.

Arjen is famous for the information security handbook he wrote for journalists with Sikie Carlo, a must for investigative journalists who try to secure their communications and sources. In this context he also met with Julian Assange at the Embassy who helped with the book, which you can find here. https://tcij.org/sites/default/files/u11/InfoSec%20for%20Journalists%20V1.3.pdf

The last years he worked a lot, in and alongside their Amsterdam based company Pretty Good Knowledge, with Bill Binney and Kirk Wiebe. Binney and Wiebe are also part of the
Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS). The VIPS is a highly experienced former intelligence officials group from the US. Over a period of time, they did an independant forensic investigation into the assumed hack of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Their analyses is based on metadata provided by the online persona Guccifer 2.0, who took credit for the alleged hack.

The VIPS conclusion is that the DNC emails were, on July 5, 2016, downloaded directly from a DNC computer onto a thumb drive or some other external device. This because the DNC data was copied at a speed that far exceeds any Internet capability. The DNC emails were not hacked by Russia, but stolen by an insider. "Amsterdam" was also involved in this investigation and tests.  Although initially the VIPS faced many skeptics, even from inside their own group, no one with an understanding of the science involved any longer questions the validity of the findings, based on the observed transfer rates.

It's of no surprise that when on 25 Jan 2018 an artice in the Volkrant appeared https://www.volkskrant.nl/wetenschap/dutch-agencies-provide-crucial-intel-about-russia-s-interference-in-us-elections~b4f8111b/ stating Dutch agencies have crucial intel about Russia's interference in US-elections, that Arjen is the one to critise. He knew the lies this follow up lie tries to cover. https://www.bnr.nl/podcast/ask-me-anything/10338838/cyberspionage

Many of Arjan's friends state Wikileaks is overblowing his connection to Wikileaks but fact  is that Arjen knew to distinguish between the importance of Freemdom of Press and
1) the content of the press-messages
2) the liking of JA and the press-organization WL

to immediately close the Grand Jury investigation into WikiLeaks and drop any charges against Julian Assange and other Wikileaks staff members, because it's a threat to all

‏ Interesting to read Chapter 7 …  by Arjen Kamphuis on cellphone security.  Put the phone (burner phone for most secure) in a Faraday cage (biscuit tin) so no one can see where you are (having removed battery).  #ArjenKamphuis

nov 2017 But in the election campaign of 2016, it sometimes became hard to distinguish between the Twitter feeds of Breitbart, WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign. It was clear to me that Julian had picked a candidate and was helping the campaign, no matter how hard both sides denied it. As much as I like and respect some of the people who work or have worked for WikiLeaks, WikiLeaks itself wasn’t my cup of tea anymore. It was certainly legitimate to publish the e-mails that show how the Sanders campaign was sabotaged by the DNC. It was just the way things were presented that really didn’t work for me anymore. But who am I to tell someone he cannot campaign against a candidate who wants him “droned,” even if in a two party system (fix needed) this means he’s effectively campaigning for someone that I think is even worse?
